DURHAM – With the fall season slowly approaching, Duke women's tennis incoming freshman Ellie Coleman is set to compete in the 2021 U.S. Junior Open Championship, beginning on Monday, Sept. 6 and running through Saturday, Sept. 11 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
Coleman has been drawn into section four as a direct qualifier and will open play against Slovakia's Bianca Behulova. The two have met on two previous occasions, with each taking one match against each other. Should Coleman win, she would advance to the second round to face Greece's 15th-seeded Michaela Laki, who earned a bye through the first round.
It's not Coleman's first time in this event, after earning a wild card in 2019 and falling in three sets to 12th-seeded Park So-Hyun of South Korea, 3-6, 6-3, 3-6 in the first round. However, Coleman was able to qualify directly this year, without a wild card and enters the event with a junior ranking of No. 41 and as the seventh-highest seeded American in the field.
Coleman is set to join fellow freshman Emma Jackson and graduate transfer Eliza Omirou as newcomers on the 2021-22 Blue Devil roster.
