DURHAM – Duke women's tennis has finished day one at two local events, completing the opening rounds at the Fall Ranked Spotlight in Cary, N.C., and the Kitty Harrison Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Friday.
Fall Ranked Spotlight

Chloe Beck and freshman
Emma Jackson — were in action on day one at the Cary Tennis Park. Action began with doubles, with Beck and Jackson teaming up for the first time. The duo faced a difficult test in the opening round, falling, 6-2, to Evgeniya Levashova and Valeriya Zeleva of Central Florida, but bounced back with a 6-4 victory over Ayana Akli and Sarah Hamner of South Carolina.
In singles, Beck delivered the first win of the day to advance in the main draw, defeating USC's Grace Piper in a convincing 6-2, 6-4 win. Beck's run would come to an end in the main draw, as she fell to North Carolina's No. 32 Cameron Morra, 6-3, 7-5.
Jackson, a freshman from La Grange Park, I'll., lost her opening round match but bounced back for her second straight tournament with a ranked win, defeating No. 49 Sophie Abrams of NC State, 6-4, 6-0. Jackson has started her Duke singles career with a 4-1 record, with two wins over top-50 opponents.

Ellie Coleman all took on day one of play at the Kitty Harrison Invitational, hosted by North Carolina. The opening round of singles and doubles were huge successes for the Blue Devils, beginning with 6-1 doubles win by Coleman and Omirou over Sofia Johnson and Alexandra Viktorovich of Old Dominion.
Both continued their winning ways in singles, with Chen joining them in advancing to their respective quarterfinals. Chen was perfect in singles on the day, winning her opening match 6-1, 6-3 over Wake Forest's Saby Nihalani and following it up with another win over Florida's Sydney Berlin, 6-2, 6-4. Chen has set up a ranked clash in the semifinal on Saturday, as she advances to face No. 82 Elizabeth Scotty of North Carolina.
