DURHAM – For the 14th consecutive year, Duke's football coaches will display their support of the Coach to Cure MD program when they take the field Saturday against Kansas.
The Blue Devils will wear the organization's patch during their game with the Jayhawks at 4 p.m. on ACC Network. Over the last 10 years, Coach to Cure MD has raised more than $1.2 million for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (Dushenne).
This weekend in connection with the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), coaches nationwide will participate in a one-day awareness building and fundraising event. Coaches will wear the traditional Coach to Cure MD logo patch on the sidelines and college football fans will be asked to donate to research projects supported by Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD), the largest, most comprehensive nonprofit organization in the U.S. focused entirely on Duchenne.
Football fans can donate by going online to ParentProjectMD.org in honor of their favorite college coach, or by texting the word CURE to 501501 to make a $25 donation on their next mobile phone bill.
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is the most common fatal genetic disorder diagnosed during childhood, primarily affecting boys of all races and cultures. People with Duchenne develop progressive muscle weakness that eventually causes loss of mobility, wheelchair dependency, and a decline in respiratory and cardiac function. Currently, there is no cure for Duchenne. But thanks to Coach To Cure MD and the work of Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy, there is hope.
About the AFCA
The AFCA was founded in 1922 and currently has more than 11,000 members around the world ranging from the high school level to the professional ranks. According to its constitution, the AFCA was formed, in part, to "maintain the highest possible standards in football and in the coaching profession" and to "provide a forum for the discussion and study of all matters pertaining to football."
