DURHAM, N.C. - The 2021 Duke volleyball team kicked off the program's 51st season on Monday.Â
Entering her 23rd season at the helm of the program, head coach Jolene Nagel returns 11 letterwinners from this past season's squad, including All-ACC selections Mackenzie Cole, Ade Owokoniran and Payton Schwantz, in addition to five newcomers. During her Duke tenure, Nagel has led the Blue Devils to 13 NCAA Tournament appearances and 14 seasons with 20 or more victories.
In addition to returnees Cole, Owokoniran and Schwantz, Nagel welcomes back seniors Lily Cooper and Alex Springate, juniors Lizzie Fleming, Gracie Johnson, Camille Nazor and Moorea Wood and sophomores Georgia Stavrinides and Sydney Yap.Â
Duke adds five newcomers in graduate student Taylor Cole, sister of Mackenzie, and freshmen Ngozi Iloh, Rylie Kadel, Rachel Richardson and Nikki Underwood. Â
The Blue Devils concluded the 2020-21 season 9-13 overall and went 7-10 in conference.
Duke opens the 2021 campaign with an exhibition match against North Carolina A&T Thursday, Aug. 19 in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils will hit the road to officially kick off the season at the Coastal Carolina Invitational Aug. 27-28 in Conway, S.C.
Duke Athletics announced that venues will return to full capacity during the upcoming academic year. Should state, local or campus regulations related to capacity, distancing and masking change prior to or during the season, operational policies at each venue could be altered. Those changes would be communicated via GoDuke.com and teams' social media accounts. Duke University encourages all fans to obtain a COVID-19 vaccine prior to attending events on campus.
