DURHAM – United Soccer Coaches released its preseason national poll for the 2021 campaign on Wednesday, with the Duke women's soccer team checking in at No. 6 in the rankings.
The Blue Devils are coming off an appearance in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament in May, and concluded the 2020-21 season at No. 7 in the United Soccer Coaches final poll. Duke put together a 12-5-4 record in an unprecedented season that featured matches in the fall of 2020 and spring of 2021 – the first time in program history that the Blue Devils played past the month of December. This marks the sixth consecutive year that Duke opens the season ranked in the top 12 nationally.
Five of the teams ranked in the top seven come from the ACC with Florida State listed at No. 1 heading into the fall. National semifinalists North Carolina and Virginia take the No. 3 and No. 4 spots, respectively, followed by Duke at No. 6 and Clemson at No. 7. Defending national champion Santa Clara is ranked No. 2, while UCLA (No. 5), TCU (No. 8), Texas A&M (No. 9) and Penn State (No. 10) round out the top 10.
Duke travels to Clemson for an exhibition match against the Tigers on Friday, Aug. 13 at 6 p.m., and will face seven ranked opponents during the regular season – No. 13 Arkansas (Aug. 19), No. 19 Washington (Aug. 22), No. 18 Vanderbilt (Aug. 29), No. 24 Stanford (Sept. 2), No. 3 North Carolina (Sept. 17), No. 4 Virginia (Sept. 23) and No. 1 Florida State (Oct. 24).
The Blue Devils are returning 21 letterwinners, including nine starters, from the 2020-21 team. Each of the three team captains from last season's squad –
Tess Boade,
Caitlin Cosme and
Lily Nabet – are using their additional year of eligibility granted by the NCAA due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Duke will take the pitch for the first time this season on Tuesday, Aug. 10 in an exhibition against Georgia at Koskinen Stadium. The match will kick off at 6 p.m. and admission is free to the general public.
