DURHAM – Duke senior
Mackenzie Pluck was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week after scoring in both of the Blue Devils' wins over ranked opponents last week.
In the season-opener against No. 13 Arkansas on Thursday, Aug. 19, Pluck took over in the second half, drawing two penalties in a row to set Duke up with back-to-back PK opportunities. After graduate student
Tess Boade converted the first attempt, Pluck was given the chance to extend Duke's lead to 3-1 and did so by firing her shot into the lower right corner.
Three days later on Sunday, Aug. 22, the North Wales, Pa., native scored the game-winner in the 88th minute to lead Duke to a 2-1 win over 19th-ranked Washington. Freshman
Michelle Cooper played a through ball that led Pluck just inside the 18-yard box, and after the Huskies' goalkeeper came charging out to stop her first attempt, Pluck corralled the rebound and calmly sent a left-footed shot into the open net to lift the Blue Devils to a thrilling victory.
She also assisted on Cooper's goal that opened the scoring in the 53rd minute, marking the sixth time in Pluck's career that she recorded a goal and an assist in the same game. Her hot start to the season also marks the third time that she has found the back of the net in consecutive matches.
The senior leads Duke with eight shots on goal through two games. She now has 15 career goals, with five being game-winners, to go with 14 assists in 65 appearances.
The honor is the third TopDrawerSoccer accolade for Pluck, who was tapped to the National Team of the Week twice in 2019.
No. 6 Duke (2-0-0) wraps up its season-opening home stand on Thursday, Aug. 26, when it hosts Western Carolina at Koskinen Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET on ACC Network Extra.
