DURHAM – The teams for the 2021 Solheim Cup have been set with Duke women's golf featuring two alumnae – Celine Boutier and Leona Maguire – to represent Europe from Sept. 4-6 at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
It marks the seventh straight time a Blue Devil golfer will be competing in the Solheim Cup.
Boutier will see action in her second straight Solheim Cup, after turning in an impressive 4-0 ledger in the 2019 event to help Europe to a 14.5 to 13.5 victory in Gleneagles, Scotland. The 2015 Duke graduate has turned in another solid season on the LPGA with four top-10 and eight top-20 finishes. Boutier posted a season-best tied for fifth placement at the LPGA Mediheal Championship.
"Being part of Team Europe for the Solheim Cup this year was a goal of mine and it has been since the last edition in 2019," said Boutier. "I'm so happy that Catriona has picked me to represent Europe once again and I can't wait to play in Toledo."
A 2018 Duke graduate, Maguire will make her first appearance in the Solheim Cup and has the distinction of being the first Irish golfer to be selected to participate in the event. Maguire is coming off collecting her third straight top-15 finish in a major in 2021. Over the last seven events she has competed in, she has finished no lower than tied for 15th overall. Maguire currently ranks second in the Louise Suggs LPGA Rolex Rookie of the Year standings.
"I'm really excited, it is something that I have looked forward to," said Maguire. "I have played the PING Junior Solheim Cup in 2009 and 2011, it was an incredible thing to be part of the Junior side, so to be on the 'big' team is something really special and no Irish person has ever done it before. I think it's going to be great for Irish golf and to show the young girls coming up that it is possible to do things if you set your mind to it. Catriona [Matthew] is a legend in her own right – a winning Solheim Cup captain and a Major winner. For her to think I'm good enough to be on her team is quite humbling and an honour."
Other Duke golfers who have competed in the Solheim Cup include Boutier (2019) and Brittany Lang (2017, 2015, 2013, 2011, 2009).
The biennial Solheim Cup is the most prestigious international women's professional golf team event. Team USA leads Team Europe, 10-6, all-time in Solheim Cup competition.
