DURHAM – Following
Jalen Johnson's selection by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2021 NBA Draft Thursday, the Blue Devils added two more former players to the NBA as
DJ Steward signed a training camp deal with the Sacramento Kings and
Matthew Hurt inked a two-way contract with the Houston Rockets.
NBA training camps begin Tuesday, Sept. 28. Steward will train alongside fellow Duke standout
Marvin Bagley III, who is set to enter his fourth NBA season with the Kings.
A 6-2 combo guard out of Chicago, Steward led all ACC freshmen in scoring during the 2020-21 season with 13.0 points per game in 24 contests. He shot .426 from the field, .341 from three-point range, .811 at the free throw line and scored in double figures 17 times while averaging 2.4 assists. Steward finished his lone campaign at Duke with at least one three-pointer in each of his final 21 games and was added to the ACC All-Freshman Team, becoming the 31st Blue Devil to earn the distinction.
As a first-team All-ACC selection, Hurt emerged as one of the league's elite offensive performers in his sophomore campaign. The Rochester, Minn., native's 18.3 points per game and 18.6 points in conference-only games both led the league, while his .556 field goal percentage ranked second in the conference and 38th nationally. A consistent threat from the perimeter, Hurt knocked down 56-of-126 (.444) from three-point range, and his 2.33 made three-pointers per contest were good for fourth in the ACC. He was tapped the ACC's Most Improved Player after nearly doubling his scoring (9.7 to 18.3) and rebounding (3.8 to 6.2) averages from his freshman to sophomore year.
