TOKYO – Former Duke men's basketball player Jahlil Okafor completed his Olympics debut for the Nigerian National Team, averaging 9.0 points and shooting .857 from the field in three pool play games at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics basketball tournament.
Okafor played 11 minutes in his debut game, scoring four points with four rebounds on 2-of-2 shooting in an 84-67 loss to Australia. He followed that with a nine-point effort on 3-of-4 from the field with two boards in a narrow, 99-92, loss to Germany.
The 2015 national champion and current Detroit Pistons center capped his Olympics in strong fashion, hitting 7-of-8 from the floor and scoring 14 points with eight rebounds in 20 minutes during an 80-71 loss to Italy.
Okafor, who was one of two Blue Devils in the 2020 Tokyo games along with American Jayson Tatum, finished with 27 points in three games and shot 12-of-14 (.857) from the field, but the Nigerians failed to advance from Pool B.
Tatum and the United States advanced from Pool A with a 2-1 record and face Spain in the quarterfinals of the knockout round at 12:40 a.m. ET on Tuesday, Aug. 3. Tatum averaged 16.7 points and shot .500 (18-of-36) from the field in pool play.
