DURHAM, N.C. – Duke wrestling head coach
Glen Lanham has announced the addition of
Gabe Dinette as a transfer student, beginning in the 2021-22 season. Dinette comes to Durham via Stanford, with three years of eligibility remaining.
Â
"He's going to bring a maturity at his weight," said Lanham. "I think that any time you get a guy who's been in a college room, Division I room like Stanford, he's going to bring that experience to our program. We know that he's lifelong friends with the Finesilver's, so we know that he's going to work out as far as that goes for us, so we're excited to get him. I think he's going to be a great fit at 157Â and 165 lb weight classes and I think he will be a great fit for us."
Â
A native of Golden, Colo., Dinette last competed as a redshirt freshman during the 2019-20 season, where he was named to the Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll. Dinette rotated between the 157, 165 and 174 weight classes, combining to go 6-4 overall and 2-2 in dual matches, with wins over wrestlers from San Francisco State and Arkansas-Little Rock.
Â
Dinette added many of his wins at the Battle at The Citadel in a meet that featured his new team, finishing fourth in the 157-pound bracket. Dinette helped the Cardinal finish first overall at the event, as the team tallied 144 points. He also redshirted during the Cardinal's 2019 Pac-12 championship, which was the first in the program's history.
Â
A decorated high school wrestler, Dinette was the first three-time state champion in Lakewood High School's history, becoming a 2017 All-American, 2018 5A League MVP, three-time All-State honoree and Three-time First Team All-Conference.
Â
The addition of Dinette will give the Blue Devils three from the centennial state, joining fellow Coloradans
Josh Finesilver and
Matt Finesilver.
