DURHAM – TopDrawerSoccer.com released its Women's Preseason Best XI teams heading into the 2021 campaign, with Duke junior
Sophie Jones earning a spot on the First Team and newcomer
Michelle Cooper named to the Freshman Team.
A preseason All-ACC pick, Jones is one of three players in the conference listed on TopDrawer's Best XI First Team, joining Florida State's Jaelin Howell and Emily Madril. The Menlo Park, Calif., native was a Best XI Second Team selection in the 2020-21 season, when she recorded three goals and three assists in 21 games while establishing herself as one of the nation's premier midfielders. Jones was one of three Blue Devils named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Atlantic Region team and became the 15th player in program history to collect All-America status when she was tapped to the USC Third Team.
Cooper earns her first preseason award in her Duke career and joins North Carolina's Emily Colton and Notre Dame's Korbin Albert in representing the ACC on the Preseason Freshman Best XI squad. The Clarkston, Mich., native who came to Durham from IMG Academy has already flashed her offensive potential during the preseason, as she recorded an assist in Duke's exhibition win over Georgia on Aug. 10 and followed up with a breakaway goal at No. 7 Clemson on Aug. 13. Cooper was a United Soccer Coaches High School All-American in 2017 and 2019, and has taken part in several international competitions while playing with U.S. Youth National Teams.
Duke boasts 12 all-time Best XI selections, including at least one pick in five out of the last six seasons.
The Blue Devils, who are ranked No. 7 nationally in the TopDrawerSoccer.com preseason poll, open the 2021 regular season at Koskinen Stadium against No. 10 Arkansas on Thursday, Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra and serve as Duke's first game in the 2021 Carolina Nike Classic.
