CLEMSON, S.C. – The No. 6 Duke women's soccer team concluded the preseason with a 3-1 exhibition win at No. 7 Clemson on Friday night.
The Blue Devils wasted little time getting on the board as freshman
Michelle Cooper scored on a left-footed shot on a breakaway just 8:18 into the first half. Sophomore
Katie Groff played a through ball from Duke's defensive third of the field past multiple Clemson players to spring Cooper in stride, and the newcomer from Clarkston, Mich., buried her first goal in a Duke kit.
Clemson answered less than two minutes later, when a throw in by Renee Guion found Makenna Morris running up the left sideline past the Duke defense. Morris sent her shot past
Ruthie Jones into the bottom right corner of the net, knotting the game at 1-1 at the 10:14 mark.
The two sides traded possession over the next 30 minutes of play with the Blue Devils finding multiple scoring opportunities. A nifty passing play in the 20th minute set up Cooper for a one-timer, but her shot was turned away by Clemson goalkeeper Ally Lynch before follow-up attempt from sophomore
Olivia Migli hit the outside of the cage.
Duke broke through with its second goal just before halftime, when a sequence of passes found senior
Sydney Simmons at the top of the 18-yard box. Simmons one-touched the ball to her right, locating classmate
Delaney Graham who fired her shot under the crossbar to make it 2-1 at 43:52.
The Blue Devils would control the pace for nearly the entire second half, finishing the match with 13 shots and six on target. Duke grabbed a two-goal cushion in the 82nd minute, as senior
Marykate McGuire picked up the ball 10 yards outside of the box and dribbled her way into a shooting position before scoring on a hard left-footed attempt.
Jones recorded one save in 80 minutes of play while also shutting down multiple corner kick opportunities for Clemson throughout the match.
Maddie Nielsen, who joined the team as a graduate transfer after a four-year career at Minnesota, got her first action with the Blue Devils as she was subbed in with 10:15 remaining.
The Blue Devils now turn their attention to the regular season, which begins Thursday, Aug. 19 when they host No. 13 Arkansas at Koskinen Stadium as part of the Carolina Nike Classic. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. To view Duke's safety measures for 2021-22 athletic events, please visit
