DURHAM – The Duke volleyball program and head coach
Jolene Nagel are excited to announce its captains for the 2021 season as seniors
Mackenzie Cole and
Alex Springate will lead the Blue Devils this fall.
"It gives me great pride to talk about
Mackenzie Cole and
Alex Springate as our team captains," Nagel said. "They are selfless, hard working and committed student-athletes who have earned the respect of all of their teammates and coaches. They hold themselves to the highest of standards and set an example daily with their actions. They care more about the team than themselves and they demonstrate that in their thoughts and interactions with others. They care deeply about our success as a team as well as their teammates. They are two special leaders that have earned the role they are in and our team is thriving as a result."
The two have combined to play in 137 matches over the last three years.
Cole has been a mainstay for Duke's defense the past three years and helped spearhead a defense that once led the nation in opponent hitting percentage. Last season, Cole racked up 396 digs, 38 service aces and 93 assists. The Oakdale, N.Y., native ranked third in the ACC in digs and fourth in aces, where she picked up a season-high six in Duke's victory over Virginia in the fall. She registered 20-plus digs six times this year and became the 24th Blue Devil to reach the 1,000-dig plateau for her career. Cole ended her third year with the Blue Devils with 1,237 career digs to rank 12th in Duke history.
Springate has emerged as Duke's leading setter and sets an example on and off the court. Last season, Springate saw action in each contest as the main setter and dished an impressive 551 assists for a 6.48 assists/set average. During the spring campaign, she averaged 25.14 assists per match and dished a career-high 46 assists against Pittsburgh. The Allen, Texas native added 181 digs to rank second on the team, only behind libero Cole, and accumulated six double-double performances.
Cole, Springate and the rest of the Blue Devils will welcome North Carolina A&T for an exhibition match Thursday, Aug. 19 at 6:30 p.m., in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
