DURHAM – The 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games concluded on Sunday and with it saw standout performances by a record-number of Duke Blue Devils to compete in a single Olympics.
A total of 16 with Duke connections – either coaches, former student-athletes or Duke alumni – participated in nine sports across seven nations to mark the largest number of Blue Devils appearing in a single Olympic competition.
Gold medals went to
Quinn of the Canadian women's soccer team, former basketball stars
Jayson Tatum and
Chelsea Gray of the U.S. men's and women's basketball teams, while Duke women's basketball coach
Kara Lawson led the USA women's 3x3 basketball to gold.
Additionally,
Jessica Springsteen, '14 Duke alum, helped the United States women's equestrian team to a silver medal while former Blue Devil
Morgan Pearson took silver as part of the United States mixed triathlon relay.
Duke has had a former player compete in the Olympics in each of the last seven summer games, including multiple Blue Devils in two of the last three and three of the last six. Duke's previous record for a single Olympics was 11 participating in the 2016 Games in Rio.
