DURHAM N.C. -- With the WNBA past the midpoint on its 25th season, the former Blue Devils are making contributions in a variety of different ways. This also includes Chelsea Gray, who later this month will compete on the U.S. Women's National Team as they attempt to go for a seventh straight gold medal in the Olympic games in Tokyo. The Blue Devils that are included in this most recent update are: Chelsea Gray, Elizabeth Williams, Haley Gorecki, Jasmine Thomas, Leaonna Odom, and Lexie Brown.
Chelsea Gray-- Duke '14
Las Vegas Aces (WNBA), 5-11, Guard
2021 Stats: 18 games, 11.7 PPG, 6.4 APG, 3.0 RPG, 1.3 SPG
The Las Vegas Aces have been one of the hottest teams in the WNBA winning nine out of the last 10 games, including a 95-92 victory over the Seattle Storm. In that contest, Gray had 21 points, seven assists, and two rebounds. Gray took scoring control of the game in the fourth quarter to help the Aces take the game into overtime. In that final overtime period, Gray scored multiple buckets including a jumper over Breanna Stewart to give the Aces a 93-92 lead with 10 seconds remaining in the overtime period. When asked about Gray's performance against the Storm, Bill Laimbeer, the Las Vegas Aces head coach, said "It's why we signed her in February, to take over the game. To make big shots and big plays. I've been waiting for that, and today was her stage." In Gray's latest game on Thursday, July 7, Gray continued on her hot streak in a game against the Phoenix Mercury where she had 19 points, six assists, and five rebounds. The Aces and Mercury went to overtime, where the Aces lost by a score of 99-90. The Aces current record is 14-5, which is second in the WNBA only to the Seattle Storm. With 13 games left for the Aces, and arguably the hottest player in the WNBA right now, and Chelsea Gray are in prime position to compete and finish the season with a top spot in the WNBA regular season. The next game for the Aces will be on Friday, July 9, at 10:30 p.m. EST.
Elizabeth Williams-- Duke '15
Atlanta Dream (WNBA), 6-3, Forward/Center
2021 Stats:-- 17 games, 5.7 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 1.2 SPG, .9 APG
In the last two games against the strongest two teams in the WNBA (Las Vegas Aces and Seattle Storm), Elizabeth Williams scored double-digit points in both contests. In the contest versus the last year's WNBA champion, Seattle Storm, Williams scored 10 points along with two rebounds to help the Dream stay alive in the game. Although the Dream got narrowly defeated by the Storm 91-88, the game provided a much needed confidence booster to the struggling team. Only two other players on the Dream have played more minutes than Williams. Williams has been consistent this season with her effort on both ends of the floor. The Dream's record is currently 6-11 and are seated in the 10th spot in the WNBA, but with 15 games remaining for the team, the Dream still have an opportunity to crack the top eight and make the WNBA playoffs. The next game for Elizabeth Williams and Atlanta will be on Friday, July 9, at 7 p.m. EST, when the Dream takes on the Connecticut Sun.
Haley Gorecki-- Duke '20
Phoenix Mercury (WNBA), 6-0, Guard
2021 Stats:-- 3 games, .67 RPG, 2.0 MPG
With the return of Phoenix Mercury star player Diana Taurasi, Haley Gorecki was waived by the team on Friday, June 25.
Jasmine Thomas-- Duke '11
Connecticut Sun (WNBA), 5-9, Guard
2021 Stats: 16 games, 11.5 PPG, 3.9 APG, 2.8 RPG, .8 SPG
Jasmine Thomas recently had her best game this season, from a scoring perspective, amassing 21 points in 29 minutes to help the Sun get a win against the Washington Mystics on Tuesday, June 29. Thomas, when available to play, has started every game this season, and is one of the main contributing factors behind the team's overall success. The Sun are currently 12-6 on the season and are the best team in the Eastern Conference, while ranking third overall in the WNBA. Another key performance that came from this Duke alum occurred when the team took the floor versus the Chicago Sky on Sunday, June 27. Thomas scored 18 points, had three assists, and one rebound in 26 minutes in the decisive, 74-58, victory over their conference rival. The Sun and Thomas will take the floor again on Friday, July 9, at 7 p.m. EST and will compete against the Atlanta Dream.
Leaonna Odom-- Duke '20
New York Liberty (WNBA), 6-2, Forward
2021 Stats: 11 games, 4.5 PPG, 1.1 RPG, 14.1 MPG
With the end of the season approaching rapidly, the New York Liberty and Leaonna Odom are starting to peak at the right time -- winning three of their last four contests. In that stretch, Odom had her best game of the season scoring 10 points on Tuesday, June 29 when the Liberty took the Atlanta Dream down to the wire in a tough match up, but unfortunately losing 73-69. The Liberty's recent success has helped to seed the team right now in the third spot in the Eastern Conference and sixth overall in the WNBA. Odom will have a chance to duplicate her performance when the Liberty take on the struggling Indiana Fever on Friday, July 9, at 7 p.m. EST.
Lexie Brown-- Duke '18
Chicago Sky (WNBA), 5-9, Guard
2021 Stats: 8 games, 1.6 PPG, 1.4 APG, 9.5 MPG
The Chicago Sky, with the help of Lexie Brown, have continued to play well after struggling earlier this season. Brown has continued to earn more minutes as the season. Brown and the red-hot Chicago Sky will have another chance to climb even higher in the ranks on Saturday, July 10, at 10 p.m. EST when the Sky will take on the Washington Mystics.
