DURHAM – A pair of Duke University women's golf incoming freshmen – Sophia Bae and Rylie Heflin – closed action in amateur tournaments this week.
Bae, who hails from Norwood, N.J., turned in back-to-back rounds of 73 in stroke play qualifying at the New Jersey State Golf Association 96th Women's Amateur Championship to place tied for fifth. She collected a 5&4 victory over Christine Shao in the round of 16 of match play, before dropping a 2&1 decision to Yoona Kim in the quarterfinals at the Rumson Country Club in Rumson, N.J. Ami Gianchandani collected the title with a 4&3 win over Kim.
A product of Avondale, Pa., Heflin turned in a final round of 73 on her way to moving up the leaderboard at the Girls Junior PGA Championship, which was played at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky. Heflin tied for 45th with rounds of 79, 74, 76 and 73 for a 10-over, 302. Anna Davis shot 15-under, 277, to claim the victory.
Rising junior
Megan Furtney opened the inaugural Sea Island Women's Amateur with a 75, but was forced to withdraw from the tournament in the second round and did not finish.
Two Duke graduates – Sarah LeBrun Ingram and Jean Bartholomew continue to participate in the U.S. Senior Women's Open that will continue through Aug. 1 at Brooklawn Country Club in Fairfield, Conn. Fans can watch the action on the Golf Channel on July 31 from 2-5 p.m., and Aug. 1 from 2-5 p.m.
