DURHAM – Duke swimming and diving head coach
Dan Colella announced the incoming freshman class for the 2021-22 season. With the announcement, GoDuke.com will be highlighting all 12 signees in the coming weeks.
Will McCollum will join the Blue Devils this fall after concluding his prep diving career at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School under coach Jason Blanken. McCollum, a native of Chevy Chase, Md., also dove for Monumental Dive Club under the tutelage of Wesley Mattice.
"Duke's reputation as a top tier school for student-athletes attracted me right away," McCollum said. "While I was considering diving at several reputable institutions, the moment I met the coaches and team at Duke, I knew it was the place for me. The swimmers and divers have a strong sense of community which played a big role in my decision."
McCollum began diving in his junior year of high school. In his final two years, McCollum earned NISCA All-America honors both seasons. He placed third at the Maryland State Championship in his first year of high school diving. As a senior, McCollum won the Region 1 Championship in both the one-meter and three-meter events.
McCollum also qualified for the Junior Nationals meet as a senior.
Out of the pool, McCollum was awarded the Maryland Student Athlete Award, an AP Scholar with Honors and was a member of the National Honors Society.
William Carson McCollum was born on March 28, 2003. He is the son of Jennifer and William (Chip) McCollum. He has two siblings, an older sister, Madeleine, and a younger brother, Hunter. Will's uncle, David Scherer, lettered three seasons on the football team at Harvard ('93).
