DURHAM – Former Duke star
Jayson Tatum has been selected to his first U.S. Olympic Men's Basketball Team, as USA Basketball unveiled its 12-man roster for the upcoming Summer Games in Tokyo, Japan.
Tatum joins a U.S. squad that is seeking its fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal. The two-time NBA All-Star as a member of the Boston Celtics has competed with Team USA at several international events, including the 2019 FIBA World Cup, 2015 FIBA U19 World Championship, 2014 FIBA U17 World Championship and 2013 FIBA Americas U16 Championship.
He will be the 13th former Blue Devil to represent his country in men's basketball at the Olympics and the seventh Duke player to suit up for Team USA, joining
Jeff Mullins (1964),
Tate Armstrong (1974),
Christian Laettner (1992),
Grant Hill (1996),
Carlos Boozer (2004 and 2008) and
Kyrie Irving (2016). Duke has had a former player compete in the Olympics in each of the last seven Summer Games.
A native of St. Louis, Mo., Tatum averaged 16.8 points and 7.3 rebounds in 2016-17, his lone season at Duke, before being selected third overall by Boston in the 2017 NBA Draft. In 289 career regular-season games, he has posted averages of 19.4 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists. He earned All-NBA Third Team honors for the 2019-20 season and was voted an NBA All-Star in 2020 and 2021.
The 23-year-old Tatum emerged as one of the Association's elite scorers this year, as his career-high 26.4 points per game ranked 10th in the NBA, while he also set career bests in rebounds (7.4) and assists (4.3). Tatum had numerous high-scoring outbursts, including a 60-point performance against the San Antonio Spurs on April 30 that tied the Celtics' franchise record for a single game. He became the first player in franchise history to record multiple 50-point games in a single season.
The upcoming Summer Games mark the first Olympics since 2004 in which Team USA is not led by Duke head coach
Mike Krzyzewski. Serving as the head coach of the U.S. National Team from 2005-16, Coach K guided the program to an 88-1 record in international competitions and three consecutive Olympic gold medals.
The Tokyo Summer Olympic Games are set for July 23-Aug. 8. Men's basketball preliminary play is July 24-Aug. 1, with the quarterfinals scheduled for Aug. 2-3, semifinals for Aug. 5, gold medal game for Aug. 6 and bronze medal game for Aug. 7.
