DURHAM – Three members of the 2020-21 Duke men's basketball team were invited to attend the Microsoft Surface NBA Draft Combine from June 21-27, the NBA has announced.
Matthew Hurt,
Jalen Johnson and
DJ Steward are listed among the 69 players expected to attend the combine, which will be held at Wintrust Arena and the Marriott Marquis in Chicago. Players will conduct interviews with NBA teams and participate in five-on-five games, as well as shooting, strength and agility drills from June 22-25. ESPN2 (June 24) and ESPNU (June 25) will provide coverage of the five-on-five games from 3-7 p.m. ET each day. The combine serves as an important step for both players and teams in preparation for the 2021 NBA Draft on Thursday, July 29.
Duke is one of five collegiate programs with three players invited to attend the combine, joining Alabama, Baylor, Tennessee and Texas.
Should all three players hear their name called on draft night, it would mark the fourth consecutive season and fifth time in the last six years that at least three Blue Devils were selected in the NBA Draft. In the 2020 draft, which was held virtually in November for the first time in league history, Duke's
Vernon Carey Jr. (Charlotte Hornets – 32nd overall),
Tre Jones (San Antonio Spurs – 41st overall) and
Cassius Stanley (Indiana Pacers – 54th overall) were each chosen in the second round, giving the Blue Devils a total of 100 NBA Draft picks all-time.
Head coach
Mike Krzyzewski has coached a total of 67 NBA Draft picks since taking over the Duke program in 1980-81, while the 28 lottery picks that have come from Duke during his tenure are more than any team or coach in college basketball history.
