DURHAM, N.C. – A 2008 Olympic Champion and current Duke University women's basketball head coach
Kara Lawson will join NBC Olympics as a basketball analyst in Tokyo this summer, as announced by NBC Tuesday. Â
Lawson will join Olympic gold medalists Vince Carter and Candace Parker on the coverage team along with Bob Fitzgerald, who will work his fifth Olympics and will handle play-by-play duties. Â
"I'm looking forward to being a part of NBC's coverage of the Tokyo Olympics," said Lawson. "It will be a lot of fun to chronicle the U.S. women as they go for their seventh straight gold medal. I can't wait for the games!"
The Opening Ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics will be Friday, July 23, on NBC. The Olympics are scheduled to take place July 23 through Aug. 8, in Tokyo, Japan.
"We are excited to have this distinguished trio of U.S. Olympic basketball stars join our commentary team in Tokyo. Vince, Kara and Candace will bring viewers their unique perspectives on what's happening on the court while also telling the stories about what it takes to make it to the medal stand – from tryouts, to practices and qualifying, to medal-round play," said Rebecca Chatman, Vice President and Coordinating Producer of NBC Olympics production.
Along with making her NBC Olympics debut this summer in in Tokyo, Lawson will also be coaching the U.S. women's team in the new Olympic 3x3 basketball competition. Lawson guided the U.S. squad to a perfect record in the FIBA 3x3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Graz, Austria, in May on its way to qualifying for the Olympics. She has guided U.S. 3x3 teams to six gold medals since 2017. Â
Lawson, who will enter her second season as the Duke head coach, previously was an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics (2019-20) after more than a decade working in the media, during which she served as lead analyst on NBC Sports Washington's Washington Wizards telecasts and provided studio and game commentary for men's and women's college basketball and NBA on ESPN. In 2007, she became the first female analyst for a nationally televised NBA game. Lawson is one of only three NCAA Division I women's basketball coaches to play in an NCAA Final Four, win an Olympic gold medal and a WNBA championship.
In addition, Tokyo Olympic basketball will be called from NBC Sports Group's International Broadcast Center in Stamford, Conn., by Kate Scott (NBC Olympics debut, play-by-play), Fran Fraschilla (second NBC Olympics assignment, analyst) and Monica McNutt (NBC Olympics debut, analyst).
