Women’s Tennis Receives 31st Consecutive NCAA Selection

DURHAM – On Monday evening, the 18th-ranked Duke women's tennis team received its 31st-consecutive bid to the NCAA Team Championship and will compete in the tournament for the 32nd time in school history.
The Blue Devils will travel to Waco, Texas and face Alabama in the first round on Friday, May 7 at 3 p.m. ET. The winner of the match will advance to take on the winner of ninth-ranked and eighth-seeded Baylor versus Texas A&M - Corpus Christi match. The second round contest will be contested on Saturday, May 8 at 6 p.m. ET. Matches will be played at the Hurd Tennis Center.
Alabama and Duke will meet for the fourth time in school history with the Blue Devils leading the series, 2-1. The two programs last met on Feb. 8, 2015 when the Crimson Tide totaled a 4-1 victory in the ITA Indoors in Charlottesville, Va. It will mark the second time the two schools have been paired up against each other in the NCAA Tournament as in 2001 Alabama traveled to Durham and Duke registered a 4-0 victory in the second round to advance to the NCAA Sweet 16.
On the season, Alabama has totaled a 12-12 overall record in 2021 under head coach Jenny Mainz.
Duke owns an all-time record of 70-30 (.700) when competing on the national stage. In 2019, the Blue Devils advanced to the NCAA Final Four, before falling to Georgia in Orlando, Fla. Duke has reached the NCAA's main event in each of Duke head coach Jamie Ashworth's seasons with the program, amassing a record of 60-22 (.756) over that span. In 2009, Duke won the national championship with Ashworth at the helm.
A total of nine teams from the ACC received selections to the tournament – North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia Tech, NC State, Syracuse, Duke, Wake Forest, Florida State and Miami.
On the season, Duke has collected a 15-6 overall and 9-4 ACC mark, while currently being ranked No. 18 nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
Ashworth and the Blue Devils own four wins over teams ranked in the top 31 nationally and have been ranked as high as No. 6 nationally during the season. Earlier this week, senior Kelly Chen, graduate student Meible Chi, sophomore Georgia Drummy and sophomore Chloe Beck received All-ACC accolades for their play on the year.
Drummy, a sophomore from Dublin, Ireland, owns a season-best No. 19 ranking from this past week. She moved up following the first top-10 victory of her collegiate career, defeating No. 9 Natasha Subhash, 6-4, 6-1, in the ACC Tournament quarterfinal against Virginia. Drummy has now won six of her last seven singles matches, including three straight wins over ranked opponents.
In the latest ITA singles rankings, Duke has four that are ranked – Drummy (19), Chi (39), Beck (40) and Chen (47). In doubles action, the duo of Beck/Karolina Berankova check in at No. 9 in the nation to lead all Blue Devils. Right behind them are Margaryta Bilokin/Chi, who rank No. 11, No. 39 Drummy/Berankova, No. 40 Chen/Drummy, No. 51 Beck/Chi and No. T-63 Hannah Zhao/Chi.
