DURHAM, N.C. – A day after junior
Gina Kim earned Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) First Team All-American accolades, the WGCA announced senior
Jaravee Boonchant and sophomore
Erica Shepherd received Second Team All-America honors, while freshman
Phoebe Brinker was named Honorable Mention All-America on Friday.
With Boonchant being named to the second team, she became the seventh Blue Devil to earn All-American honors each of her four years, joining Leona Maguire, Lindy Duncan, Amanda Blumenherst, Liz Janangelo, Virada Nirapathpongporn and Jenny Chuasiriporn.
A native of Bangkok, Thailand, Boonchant missed the first two tournaments of the spring due to COVID-19 and traveling back from her home country. Once she returned, Boonchant competed in four stroke play tournaments and two match play events for Duke. She stepped in and fired an 8-under-par, 208, in her first tournament back as she finished tied for sixth. Boonchant posted a 72.23 stroke average on the season and did not finish lower than tied for 20th in all four stroke play events.
She concluded her Duke career with a 71.99 stroke average to rank third on the Blue Devil all-time record charts. Boonchant also ranked tied for fifth in even or under-par rounds (54) while seventh in rounds in the 60s (15) and in eagles (6).
Shepherd was tabbed All-American for the first time in her career after having a breakout sophomore campaign with the Blue Devils. She totaled a 72.42 stroke average to go along with four top-13 finishes. Shepherd, who is from Greenwood, Ind., registered her first collegiate victory at the Gamecock Intercollegiate against a stacked field with rounds of 69, 70 and 70 for a 7-under, 209. She tied for eighth at the ACC Championship, which included a second round with a 5-under, 67. Shepherd finished the season ranked No. 12 in the Golfweek individual rankings and ranked second on the team with nine rounds of even or under par.
Brinker, a product of Wilmington, Del., closed her rookie campaign with a bang as she carded rounds of 73, 70, 72 and 71 to place tied for fifth at the NCAA Championship with a 2-under-par ledger. She became just the sixth Blue Devil rookie to finish in the top five of the NCAA Championship. Brinker tied for second at the Valspar Augusta Invitational and tied for third at the Gamecock Intercollegiate. In the Valspar, Brinker collected a Duke freshman record lowest 18-hole score with an 8-under, 64, and her 10-under 54-hole score tied a freshman record as it was the fifth-lowest in school history. She closed the year with a 73.26 stroke average.
The trio of Blue Devils helped guide Duke to the 2021 ACC Championship and advance to the NCAA Championship Semifinals in Arizona. Duke collected victories at the Gamecock Intercollegiate, Cavalier Match Play and ACC Championship. The Blue Devils also finished the regular season ranked No. 1 nationally in the Golfweek ledger.
