ORLANDO, Fla. – After several fierce battles across singles and doubles, Duke women's tennis concluded its season in the round of 16 in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships on Monday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
The day began with a back-and-forth clash between senior
Kelly Chen and her opponent Christina Rosca of Vanderbilt. Chen suffered an early break but recovered with one of her own to take three straight games and lead, 4-2. Rosca answered with a break and service hold, but Chen would not be denied, taking the first set on her third break of the set by a score of 6-4.
Chen carried her lead into the second set, taking a 3-0 advantage, but Rosca responded with her own 3-0 run. A late break by Rosca delivered her the second set 6-4 and changed the tide. Chen would go on to drop the third and decisive set 6-2, despite securing an early break at 1-1.
Sophomore
Georgia Drummy faced a difficult test in Janice Tjen of Oregon, who entered off an upset win over the No. 4 player in the nation. After a 2-2 start, Drummy dropped a break which began a 4-0 run for Tjen, with the first set going to Tjen. Both players remained steady on their serves in the second, not dropping anything until 4-4, when Drummy finally dropped serve, leading to a 2-6, 4-6 defeat.
The match of the night came in doubles, as sophomore
Chloe Beck and freshman
Karolina Berankova fought an incredible battle. Beck/Berankova matched their opponents from NC State from start to finish, holding serve until it was 5-5. Alana Smith and Anna Rogers secured a break to take a 6-5 lead, but Beck/Berankova answered, breaking right back and earning a tiebreaker win to take the first set 7-6 (5). Beck/Berankova built an early 3-1 lead, but Smith/Rogers responded with a 3-0 run and ultimately took the second set 4-6. In a thrilling, first-to-10 third set tiebreaker, Beck/Berankova used a 4-0 run to take a 6-2 lead. Smith/Rogers responded with a 5-0 run, to take a 7-6 lead. While the Blue Devil duo tied it immediately, Smith/Rogers took the next three to win the match.
