ORLANDO, Fla. – Duke senior Sean Sculley and sophomore Garrett Johns had their strong doubles campaign come to an end on Monday night in the opening round of the NCAA Doubles Championship.
The Blue Devils' top doubles tandem dropped a 6-0, 6-4 decision to No. 3 seeded Pat Harper and Adam Walton of Tennessee at the USTA National Campus.
Sculley and Johns were ranked No. 20 in the latest Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, while Harper and Walton stood at No. 4.
The Blue Devils tried to battle in the opening set but weren't able to spark a rally as the duo was shut out during the first frame. Duke bounced back in the second set though and even held the 4-3 edge in the frame but ultimately weren't able to hold on against its top-five opponent.
The Blue Devil pair finishes the season with a 9-10 record and a 1-2 mark in tournament action.
Sculley and Johns helped guide the Blue Devils to a 12-11 record in 2021 and a return trip to the NCAA Team Championship. Duke was ranked No. 32 in the most recent Oracle/ITA team ledger.
