COLUMBUS, Ohio — For the 32nd time in school history, the Duke women's golf team will participate in the NCAA Championship as the Blue Devils carded a 54-hole ledger of 880 to finish in a tie for second at the 6,335-yard, Par 72 The Ohio State Golf Club Scarlett Course.
Duke advances to Scottsdale, Ariz., where the Blue Devils will play May 21-26 at the Raptor Course at Grayhawk Golf Club in search of their eighth NCAA Championship. The Blue Devils are the reigning NCAA Champions, after claiming their seventh trophy in 2019 in Fayetteville, Ark.
With Duke finishing in the top four of the regional, it marks the eighth straight year Duke has placed in the top four under the direction of head coach
Dan Brooks.
Georgia claimed the regional title with a three-day total of 865, while Duke (880), Arizona State (880), Kentucky (883), Michigan (885) and Kent State (885) all advanced to Arizona for the championship.
The Blue Devils carded rounds of 287, 298 and 295 over the three days in Columbus, Ohio.
Three different Duke golfers finished in the top 13 of the event with junior
Gina Kim in a tie for 11th, while senior
Jaravee Boonchant and sophomore
Erica Shepherd in a tie for 13th.
Kim turned in rounds of 70, 74 and 74 for a 54-hole ledger of 218 over the three days. A product of Chapel Hill, N.C., Kim had an even-par round going Wednesday with two birdies on No. 2 and No. 12, but suffered back-to-back bogeys on No. 17 and No. 18 to finish with a 74. She hit 13 fairways, 12 greens and rolled 32 putts to close the week. In two NCAA Regionals she has played in, Kim has posted a tied for sixth and tied for 11 finish.
A native of Greenwood, Ind., Shepherd had a nice up-and-down par on No. 1 and then rolled in a 10-footer for birdie on the second hole to get in the red. She went on to make the turn at even par with a four-foot birdie on No. 9. On the back, Shepherd parred the first six holes and then drained an eight-footer for birdie on the 16th hole. After parring No. 17, she suffered a bogey on the 18th to finish with her ninth round of the season of even or under par. Shepherd signed for rounds of 71, 77 and 72 over the three days for a 4-over, 220, in her first regional appearance.
With rounds of 73, 74 and 73, Boonchant placed tied for 13th with a 220 as well. She connected for two birdies on the front nine on No. 4 and No. 9 as she made the turn at even par, 36. Boonchant, who is from Bangkok, Thailand, featured a great up-and-down par on the par-3 fifth as her approach was right of the green and drained a long parr putt to stay at even par. She had a bogey on No. 11 and had seven pars to close her day. The three-time All-American hit 14 greens, 12 fairways and had 33 putts.
Both freshmen
Anne Chen and
Phoebe Brinker notched a 4-over-par, 76, to close regional play. Chen was tied for 29th with a 224, while Brinker was tied for 33rd with a 225.
Chen, who is from Sugar Land, Texas, collected two birdies on the day on No. 7 as she sank a 9-footer and on No. 16 from two feet. She had rounds of 73, 75 and 76 in her first regional.
With three birdies in the final round, Brinker tied for a team best and finished the week with eight total birdies as she carded rounds of 74, 75 and 76. In the final round, she drained a 4-footer for birdie on No. 1, after a perfect drive. Brinker, who hails from Wilmington, Del., then rolled in a 10-footer on No. 4 and two-putted for birdie on the par-5 12th, after hitting the green in two.
