DURHAM, N.C. – Women's tennis senior
Kelly Chen has been selected Duke's PNC Achiever's Student-Athlete of the Week after playing a pivotal role in the Blue Devils' win at No. 8 Baylor on Saturday to advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
Playing the top spot in the singles lineup, Chen faced an early deficit of 3-6, 1-3 but mounted a comeback, winning four straight games and ultimately taking the second set 7-5. With the final matches completing around her that tied the overall match at 3-3, the pressure mounted on Chen and her No. 67 ranked opponent.
Chen was able to put away her opponent with four consecutive service breaks, building a 5-1 lead in the final set. The Cerritos, Calif., native capped the comeback with four straight points and a forehand winner in the final service game to take the match 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 and send the Blue Devils to the Sweet 16.
Duke is looking to continue its run in the NCAA Tournament with a Sweet 16 matchup set against No. 9 UCF on Sunday, May 16 at 7 p.m. at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
