DURHAM - Former Duke defensive end Chris Rumph II was selected in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Chargers.
Rumph II was the 118th overall pick in the draft, and the 13th selection in the fourth round.
Rumph II, a 6-4, 235-pound Gainesville, Fla., product is Duke's first draft pick since quarterback Daniel Jones went sixth overall to the New York Giants in the 2019 NFL Draft. He is the second Duke draft pick by the Chargers and the first since Phil Asack was a fifth-round choice in 1971. Rumph II is also Duke's first defensive end selected since Shawn Johnson went in the sixth round to the Oakland Raiders in 2004.
A 2019 All-America selection and two-time All-ACC honoree, Rumph II played 36 career games with 11 starts. He compiled 125 tackles, 34.0 tackles for loss, 17.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, five pass breakups and 18 quarterback pressures. Rumph II had 27 games with two-plus tackles, including a career-high eight stops against Miami in 2019 and Boston College in 2020. He finished his career riding a 31-game tackle streak.Duke ? During his final campaign, the team captain received second team All-ACC accolades after ranking tied for first in the ACC in sacks and seventh in tackles for loss. In 11 starts, he garnered 53 tackles (third most on team), 12.5 tackles for loss (team high), 8.0 sacks (team high), five quarterback hurries, one caused fumble, one fumble recovery and one pass breakup. Rumph II registered three-plus tackles in every game and five-plus stops in six contests. He finished tied with Chris Combs (1996) for sixth all-time on Duke's single season chart for sacks.
