DURHAM, N.C. – Duke redshirt senior
Mia Gyau has been named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week, after scoring the game-winning goal in the Blue Devils' 1-0 victory at NC State on Friday night.
The Colesville, Md., native broke a scoreless tie in the 61st minute, when she accepted a long cross from senior
Caitlin Cosme and worked the ball into the box past NC State defenders. As the ball rolled towards the end line, Gyau hustled to block the Wolfpack goalkeeper's clearing attempt and calmly buried it in the open cage to put the Blue Devils in front.
It marked her third career goal in 55 games at Duke, and her first goal since September 26, 2019.
Gyau played 90 minutes on the back line and helped limit NC State to two shot attempts and no shots on goal. Duke collected its eighth shutout win of the season, which ranks second in the ACC.
This marks the first career ACC Defensive Player of the Week honor for Gyau. Combined with junior
Marykate McGuire's Offensive Player of the Week (Sept. 15) and Cosme's two Defensive Player of the Week (Oct. 13, March 9) recognitions, Duke's four weekly awards are tied with Clemson and Pittsburgh for the most in the conference this season.
No. 7 Duke (10-5-2) wraps up the 2020-21 regular season on Sunday, April 11, when it welcomes No. 14 Vanderbilt to Koskinen Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET on ACC Network Extra.
