DURHAM, N.C. – Former Duke wrestler
Mitch Finesilver recently won a bronze medal at the 2021 European Wrestling Championships in Warsaw, Poland.
Finesilver competed under the Israeli flag, delivering the country its first medal of the event and the 11th in its history at the event.
Finesilver competed in the men's freestyle 74kg division, opening the event with an 8-2 victory over Bulgaria's David Alizalau to advance to the quarterfinals. He fell to eventual silver medalist Miroslav Kirov of Bulgaria 8-3 during his next match but continued to battle in the 'repechage' or wrestleback bracket.
Finesilver then faced San Marino's Malik Amine and recorded a close 4-3 decision to advance to the bronze medal match. In his final matchup, Finesilver faced off against Moldova's Valentin Borzin and won a sound 4-0 decision to earn bronze.
The European Wrestling Championships are the second oldest wrestling competition in the world, behind only the Olympic Games. The 2021 championships feature 444 athletes from 37 countries competing for continental gold.
Finesilver's bronze medal at the European Wrestling Championships is his second in 2021, after earning a bronze medal at an event in Nice, France, back in January. The former All-American will now turn his attention to the World Olympic Games Qualifiers that begins on May 6 and runs through until May 9.
