DURHAM -- Duke women's tennis graduate student
Meible Chi broke the school record for all-time ACC singles victories this past Sunday after clinching a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Syracuse's Ines Fonte. This victory, which marked her 42nd ACC singles win, pushed her past
Ellyse Hamlin into the number one spot for this mark. Along with Hamlin, Chi is one of only two Duke tennis players to notch 40 or more career ACC singles wins.
Chi credits the support of both the coaching staff and her teammates for this record-breaking victory.
"Honestly, I have to thank my teammates for this, because when we're out there playing our ACC matches, it can be hard with trying to get the right mindset and bringing it every single match," explained Chi. "For me, I've really relied on my teammates a lot for that throughout the years just to either bring my energy up or just kind of find any little motivation from them to stay in the match… I have to thank them for encouraging me to stick with my matches and bring it all every time."
Throughout Chi's career at Duke, head coach
Jamie Ashworth has been impressed with her excellence both on and off the court.
"Meible has been the consummate team player over her career and truly defines what it means to be a student-athlete here at Duke. She has taken advantage of every opportunity that has been presented to her on and off the court and we could not imagine someone getting more out of her collegiate experience than she has," remarked Ashworth. "From being a member of programs like ACE and CAPE to now holding the school record for ACC wins, our program and Duke have been lucky to see her growth and development over her career. We could not be prouder of what she has accomplished and know that she will continue to make Duke and those around her better."
As a student, Chi has achieved academic excellence on her path towards medical school. Her participation in both the ACE and CAPE programs impacted her perspectives on life and gave her a chance to give back. For her leadership on the court, Chi was awarded the ITA Arthur Ashe Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship Award in 2020, making her the first athlete in Duke women's tennis history to do so.
With this victory, Chi has also moved up in several other Blue Devil career records. She is fifth overall for singles wins, with 131 victories, and 13th overall for doubles wins, with 92 victories. Her combined singles and doubles wins total (223) places her fourth all-time in this category.
After the COVID-19 pandemic cancelled last year's post-season, Chi elected to return to Duke for an additional year as a graduate student. As the regular season draws to a close, Chi is excited to have one more postseason to leave it all on the court.
"I'm just grateful for the chance to actually have a postseason and really enjoy it because I didn't have it last year," commented Chi. "In a way, it's good for me to finish my career on my terms."
Chi and the Duke women's tennis squad will finish their regular season on April 18 when they take on Wake Forest at home. The ACC Championship then begins the following week on April 21 in Rome, Georgia.
