DURHAM, N.C. – Duke senior
Caitlin Cosme has been named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week, after helping the Blue Devils earn a 3-0 shutout win at UNCW on Saturday.
Cosme played 79 minutes on the back end, as Duke limited the Seahawks to just one shot the entire match. The fifth-ranked Blue Devils posted their sixth shutout victory of the 2020-21 season.
A native of New Hyde Park, N.Y., Cosme also displayed her offensive capabilities in the win, as she registered her fourth goal of the season and her first career assist. With 18:12 remaining in the first half, she headed home a high-arching corner kick from fellow senior
Tess Boade to make it a 2-0 game in favor of the Blue Devils. Just four minutes into the second half, she jumped into the offensive attack again and fed a pass through traffic to freshman
Grace Watkins, who fired the ball into the bottom left corner of the net.
After scoring just one goal in 28 matches over her first three seasons at Duke, Cosme is now tied for the team lead with four in 14 contests as a senior. Her 1,247 minutes played also pace the Blue Devils this year.
This marks Cosme's second ACC Defensive Player of the Week honor this season, as she also earned the recognition on Oct. 13, 2020, after scoring on a penalty kick in a 2-0 win over Virginia Tech. Combined with junior
Marykate McGuire's Offensive Player of the Week nod on Sept. 15, Duke's three weekly awards are tied with Clemson, Pittsburgh and Virginia for most in the conference in 2020-21.
No. 5 Duke (8-4-2, 4-4-2 ACC) plays its first home game of the spring season Sunday, March 14, when it welcomes Coastal Carolina to Koskinen Stadium for 2 p.m. kickoff.
