Blue Devils Fall at No. 6 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Duke dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 6 Virginia on Friday afternoon at the Virginia Tennis Facility.

With the win, the Cavaliers improve to 14-2 and 8-0 in ACC action, while the Blue Devils dip to 7-6 and 3-2, respectively.

Virginia started doubles play with a 6-3 victory on court three after Jeffrey von der Schulenburg and Iñaki Montes De La Torre defeated the rookie tandem of Andrew Dale and Faris Khan. The Cavaliers then clinched the doubles points a few minutes later when Ryan Goetz and Chris Rodesch beat Luca Keist and Edu Güell, 6-4, on court two. The highly anticipated matchup between No. 10 Carl Soderlund and William Woodall against No. 12 Sean Sculley and Garrett Johns went unfinished on the main court with the two teams knotted at 4-4.

The home side used the momentum from double action to register three-straight victories in singles play to secure the overall win. Woodall defeated Dale, 6-2, 6-2 on court six to earn the Cavaliers' second point of the day. Goetz then posted a 6-1 victory on court five during his opening set with Keist before going on to record a 6-4 victory in the second to register the win. Rodesch then wrapped up the win for Virginia after defeating Güell 6-4, 6-4 on court three.

Three matches went unfinished in singles action. No. 6 Soderlund was battling No. 92 Johns on the top court but that was called with Soderlund in front 7-5, 3-2. Sculley had taken his opening set against No. 21 von der Schulenburg, 6-4, on court two but was trailing in the second set 5-2 when their match was halted. Finally, Andrew Zhang had dropped a 6-1 opening set decision to No. 98 Montes De La Torre on court four but rebounded in the second and was leading 6-3 when the match was stopped.

The Blue Devils are back in action Sunday when they travel to Blacksburg, Va., to face off against Virginia Tech at 11 a.m. Both live stats and live video will be available.
