DURHAM, N.C. – Duke hits the road Friday and Sunday for two ACC tennis matches against No. 6 Virginia and Virginia Tech, respectively.
Â
The Blue Devils and Cavaliers will meet up at 3 p.m. on Friday at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center before they travel to Blacksburg, Va., for a matchup with the Hokies at 11 a.m. at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. Both matches on the weekend are scheduled to be played on outdoor courts, but that could be adjusted based on the day's weather conditions.
HISTORY WITH VIRGINIA
Friday's contest will be the 95th all-time meeting between the two schools. Duke leads the overall series 52-42, but the Cavaliers have won 17 of the last 18 meetings, including a 4-2 victory during the teams' last meeting on March 29, 2019. Duke's lone win during that stretch came on March 30, 2018 when it defeated Virginia, 4-3, in Durham.
SCOUTING THE CAVALIERS
Virginia sits at No. 6 in the most recent ITA team rankings. The Cavaliers have been ranked as high as No. 3 this season after coming into the year ranked No. 22. Graduate student Carl Söderlund is ranked No. 6 in the first updated individual rankings while he and junior William Woodall come into the weekend as the No.10 team in the country in doubles action. Freshman Jeffrey von der Schulenburg is ranked No. 21 in singles play as well, giving Virginia two players in the top-25. von der Schulenburg leads the team with a 12-2 record.
HISTORY WITH VIRGINIA TECH
Duke and Virginia Tech will meet for the 35th time on Sunday with the Blue Devils holding a commanding 29-5 edge on the series. During the teams' last meeting on Feb. 28, 2020, Duke claimed the doubles point before going on to register the 4-2 victory.
SCOUTING THE HOKIES
Virginia Tech will be back in action for the first time since March 14. Before that, the Hokies played four conference matches in the span of seven days and went 3-1 in those contests. In the latest ITA rankings, the Hokies placed two players in the singles standings – No. 49 Alex Ribeiro and No. 96 Matthis Ross. For doubles, Virginia Tech also had two ranked duos in No. 36 Jordan Chrysostom and Ryan Fishback and No. 53 Chrysostom and Ribeiro.
LAST TIME OUT
Duke has been off since March 7 when it last defeated Louisville, 4-1, at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. Louisville started doubles action with a 6-1 win on court two after Tin Chen and Sergio Hernandez defeatedÂ
Edu Güell andÂ
Luca Keist. The Blue Devils didn't waver though as No. 55Â
Sean Sculley andÂ
Garrett Johns earned a 6-3 victory on the top court to knot everything up at 1-1. A few minutes later,Â
Samuel Rubell andÂ
Andrew Zhang clinched the doubles point for Duke on court three when they recorded a thrilling 7-6 (11) tiebreak win.
The Blue Devils used that 1-0 advantage and turned it into a 3-0 edge afterÂ
Faris Khan and Keist both registered wins to kick off singles action. Khan was the first to finish following his 6-2, 6-0 victory over Alex Wesbrooks on court six. Keist then defeated David Mizrahi on court five thanks to a 6-2 win in the opening set and a 7-5 victory in the second.
Â
The Cardinals earned their lone point of the match on court three when Hernandez beat Güell 6-1, 7-5. Fortunately for Duke, Zhang secured the overall win after he bested Josh Howard-Tripp 7-5, 6-1 on court four.
