DURHAM, N.C. – Duke freshman
Mark Williams has been named to the ACC All-Tournament Second Team after averaging 18.0 points and 10.0 rebounds in two wins this past week at the Greensboro Coliseum.
The Blue Devils have had at least one ACC All-Tournament selection in each of the last six years and 10 of the last 11 seasons that the tournament was completed. Williams becomes the seventh Duke freshman in the past four years tapped to an ACC All-Tournament squad (
Jayson Tatum, 1st – 2017;
Frank Jackson, 2nd – 2017;
Marvin Bagley III, 1st – 2018;
RJ Barrett, 1st – 2019;
Zion Williamson, 1st – 2019;
Tre Jones, 2nd – 2019).
In Duke's 86-51 win over Boston College in the tournament's opening round on Tuesday, Williams finished 6-of-7 from the field for 13 points in 25 minutes. Four of his six field goals were dunks, and he added two steals, one rebound, an assist and a blocked shot.
After being limited to just one board against BC, the Virginia Beach, Va., native controlled the glass all night in the 70-56 victory over Louisville on Wednesday, as he brought down 19 rebounds to go with 23 points. Both his point and rebound totals marked career highs in his second double-double of the season. He finished 9-of-14 from the floor, giving him 100 points on 44-of-59 (.746) shooting over his last six games.
Williams' 19 rebounds were the most by a freshman an ACC Tournament game, surpassing 18 by Virginia's Ralph Sampson in 1980. It also marked the third-most rebounds by a Duke freshman in any game and tied for the second most by any Blue Devil in the ACC Tournament.
Williams played in the first nine games of the season, averaging 1.4 points in 5.8 minutes per contest. In the 14 games since not making an appearance at Louisville on Jan. 23, he has led the team in rebounds (6.1), field goal percentage (.684) and blocked shots (28) while ranking fifth in scoring (10.8). He reached double figures in points seven times, including five of the last six games.
