DURHAM, N.C. – Freshman
DJ Steward converted a layup on a fast break to cut North Carolina's lead to one with 17 seconds remaining, but three free throws from Leaky Black were enough for the Tar Heels to hold off Duke in Cameron Indoor Stadium, 91-87.
Both teams shot over 50 percent from the field in a high-scoring episode of the historic rivalry, with Duke hitting 36-of-67 (.537) and North Carolina going 34-of-64 (.531). The Blue Devils (7-7, 5-5 ACC) clawed their way back from multiple double-digit deficits and had possession down two with under 15 seconds left in the game, but a called travel on
Wendell Moore Jr. squandered their opportunity to take the lead.
Five players reached double figures in scoring for Duke, led by freshman
Jeremy Roach's 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting. Roach also dished out five assists and recorded three steals. Moore added 15 points, five rebounds and four assists, while freshman
Jalen Johnson had 15 points, five rebounds and five assists off the bench.
Also providing a spark off the bench for the Blue Devils was junior
Joey Baker, who knocked down 3-of-7 three-pointers in an 11-point effort.
Caleb Love went 9-of-16 from the field and 4-of-5 from deep for 25 points with seven assists to pace the Tar Heels (12-6, 7-4 ACC). Armando Bacot netted 16 points for North Carolina, which had six reach double figures.
