DURHAM, N.C. – Duke men's basketball signees
Paolo Banchero and
AJ Griffin have been named to the 2021 McDonald's All-American roster, the selection committee announced Tuesday.
The duo increases Duke's total to 84 McDonald's All-America selections, the most among any program. This is Duke's 37th consecutive season with a McDonald's All-America pick – the longest streak in the nation by 25 years.
Eighty-two Duke signees selected to the annual event have come under head coach
Mike Krzyzewski, which stands as the most by any coach since the inaugural game in 1978.
This season, 48 high school seniors – comprising the top 24 girls and 24 boys in the country – were selected by a committee of basketball experts from more than 700 nominated players. While the game will not take place on the court this year due to COVID-19 precautions, a virtual celebration is being planned to recognize the student-athletes.
Duke joins Kentucky and Michigan as the only programs with multiple signees selected to the boys' roster.
Banchero, a 6-9 power forward out of O'Dea High School in Seattle, Wash., is currently the No. 3 overall prospect in ESPN 100's player rankings for the class of 2021. He was named the Washington Boys Basketball Gatorade Player of the Year as a junior in 2019-20, when he averaged 22.6 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.6 blocks per game for O'Dea. Banchero was also tapped the MaxPreps Junior Player of the Year, becoming the sixth Duke signee in the past decade to earn that distinction (
Austin Rivers – 2010;
Jabari Parker – 2012;
Jayson Tatum – 2015;
Zion Williamson – 2017;
Vernon Carey Jr. – 2018).
A five-star small forward from Archbishop Stepinac in White Plains, N.Y., Griffin is currently ranked No. 14 overall and No. 1 in the state of New York by ESPN. He averaged 17.3 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.6 steals per game in 12 contests his junior season. Griffin has represented the United States at multiple amateur events, including the 2019 FIBA U16 Championship, where he averaged 13.5 points and 3.3 steals in six games to help Team USA win gold.
Three members of Duke's current freshman class –
Jeremy Roach,
DJ Steward and
Mark Williams – were selected to the 2020 McDonald's All-American game prior to the event's cancelation.
