BLACKSBURG, Va. – The 11th-ranked Duke women's tennis team traveled to Blacksburg, Va., Sunday and opened ACC action with a 7-0 victory over Virginia Tech at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
The Blue Devils improved to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in league play on the season, while winning their fifth consecutive contest against the Hokies (2-4).
"I was happy with the win," said Duke head coach
Jamie Ashworth. "I was happy it was an efficient, quick and clean match. Honestly, I thought we were actually a little nervous at the start of doubles with it being the first ACC match. We've talked about the importance of the conference and how the tradition and history of our program was built on conference success. I think in doing that a couple of them were nervous at the start."
After dropping the first game on both the first and second courts to open doubles, Duke took control on court No. 1 as the Blue Devil tandem of
Meible Chi and
Margaryta Bilokin won six straight games to defeat Nina Sorkin and Nika Kozar, 6-1. Chi and Bilokin moved to 5-2 on the season.
On court No. 3, Duke's
Kelly Chen and
Georgia Drummy won the first four games on their way to knocking off Chhinda Som and Annie Clark, 6-2. With the win on the third court, the Blue Devils won their 11th straight doubles point dating back to last season.
Duke's duo of
Karolina Berankova and
Chloe Beck were in a tight match with Tamara Barad Itzhaki and Rita Pinto on court No. 2 when the doubles point was clinched. The Blue Devils fell behind, 0-2, and 2-4, but had won two straight games when the match was abandoned.
With a 1-0 advantage heading into singles, the Blue Devils got off to good starts on four of the six courts.
Seeing action at the No. 1 slot for the second time this season, 28th-ranked Drummy was impressive against Kozar winning, 6-0, 6-1. A product of Dublin, Ireland, Drummy is now 8-2 in singles play since arriving in Durham, including four straight wins.
"It was great to get a really strong start in singles and doubles to open our ACC play," said Drummy. "We are so lucky to be able to play matches in these tough times and we want to show our appreciation by playing our hardest on the court."
Duke went ahead 3-0 after 44th-ranked Bilokin earned a 6-0, 6-0 ledger over Sorkin on court No. 4. Bilokin netted her ninth singles win on the year and fifth straight.
Chi, a graduate student hailing from Weston, Fla., would clinch the victory for Duke with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Elizabet Danailova on court No. 5.
Coming off collecting her 100th career win in the last match, eighth-ranked Chen posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Itzhaki on the second court.
On court No. 3, 29th-ranked Beck fell behind 1-2 early to Pinto but came back to earn a 6-4 win in the first set and then notched a 6-2 victory in the second set.
A rookie from Prague, Czech Republic, 95th-ranked Berankova battled back from being down, 2-4, in the first set to win 7-6 (7-4) and then cruised in the second set, 6-1, over Shene Disbergen to close the match with a 7-0 victory for the Blue Devils on court six.
"I thought overall we did a good job," said Ashworth. "We made a little switch at the top our lineup and I thought Georgia handled it great. She played a really good, efficient match. She was aggressive and moving forward. To win doubles and then follow up with a really quick singles match is always a good thing."
Duke will return home this week for the first of four consecutive home matches in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. The Blue Devils will host Louisville Saturday, Feb. 27 at 2 p.m. Duke is currently riding an ACC-best 50-match home winning streak.
