DURHAM, N.C. – Duke got back in the win column Friday afternoon following a thrilling 5-2 come-from-behind win over East Tennessee State in Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
Â
Thanks to Friday's outcome, the Blue Devils improve to 3-4 on the year, while the Bucs drop to 0-4.
Â
The visitors jumped out of the gates early, registering the doubles point after victories on court three and one, respectively. Thiago Pernas and Juan Sebastian Zabala defeated the freshmen duo of
Faris Khan and
Niroop Vallabhaneni, before Frazier Rengifo and Juan Lugo took down
Garrett Johns and
Samuel Rubell. Both matches ended at 6-4. Doubles play on court two for
Edu Güell and
Luca Keist against Dylan Bednarczyk and Dimitri Badra went unfinished at 6-5.
Â
Despite trailing 1-0 heading into singles action, Duke regrouped and refocused to earn victories in five of the six matches to steal the win.
Andrew Dale earned the Blue Devils first win after defeating Bednarczyk 6-2, 6-2 on court five. Not long after,
Andrew Zhang cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 victory on court three to hand Duke the 2-1 edge
Â
Samuel Rubell added to the Blue Devils' score a few minutes later after he defeated Lugo 7-5 in the opening set and 6-0 in the second frame on court one. Johns then secured the win for the home side following his 7-5, 6-1 victory over Rengifo on Duke's top court. Â
Â
The Blue Devils kept that momentum going with one final win on court six by Khan. The Delray Beach, Fla., native took down Pernas 7-5, 6-4 to close out Duke's scoring.
Â
In the final match of the afternoon, Güell dropped a first-set tiebreak 7-6 (4) before picking up a 6-3 win in set two. Unfortunately, his opponent Badra registered a 10-4 victory in the super tiebreaker to take the overall match.
Â
Duke is back in Sheffield on Sunday as the Blue Devils host Furman at 11 a.m.
