DURHAM – Head coach
Jamie Ashworth welcomed another top recruit to the Duke women's tennis program, with the signing of
Katie Codd as the first member of the 2022-23 incoming class.
Codd, a blue chip recruit, is currently ranked 14th nationally by TennisRecruiting.net, as well as the No. 4 player in the state of California and Southwest region. She is also currently No. 19 on the UTSA U18 National Standings List.
"We are extremely excited that Katie and her family are going to be joining the Duke Women's Tennis family," said Ashworth. "Katie is a great competitor that has really flourished in the last year. Her best tennis is in front of her and we cannot wait to see what kind of impact she makes at Duke both on and off the tennis court."
"I chose Duke because I felt like I really connected with the coaches and players there," said Codd. "I felt like the team was a family and I really wanted to be a part of that. I also feel that Duke has a great mix of strong academics and a strong tennis program."
Most recently, Codd opened her fall schedule at the USTA Billie Jean King National Hard Court Championships in August and finished as a quarterfinalist in singles in the girls 18 year old division, as well as the ITF W60 Rancho Santa Fe tennis tournament in October, where she advanced to the second round of the singles qualifying draw.
Earlier in the summer, the Carlsbad, Calif., native collected singles championships in the ITA Summer Circuit Northwestern Singles and USTA National Level 2 Singles events, as well as a third-place finish in doubles in the latter.
During Codd's junior season at Canyon Crest Academy in 2021, tennis was conducted as a coed sport for the first time in team competition based on the revised schedule because of the pandemic. Codd, alongside her brother Jackson, went 11-1 in doubles competition during the varsity season and helped lead Canyon Crest to the spring CIF Team Championship and an appearance in the semifinals of the spring California State Regional Championships, as well as the spring North County Conference Association (NCCA) Mixed Doubles Championship and a runner-up finish in the San Diego Section CIF mixed doubles championship. She was also a finalist in the spring 2021 CIF Mixed Singles Championships.
Codd spent her sophomore year competing on the junior tennis circuit, beginning with the USTA National Winter Championships, where she took home the singles championship and second place in doubles in the 16-year-old division, before going on to be a semifinalist at the July ITA Summer Circuit. In October of 2020, she collected the title in the Newport Beach Prize Money Tournament, while also advancing to the quarterfinal round in the Oracle ITA Masters Tournament.
As a freshman, Codd posted an unblemished mark of 15-0 during the varsity season en route to the 2018 CIF Singles title, while also aiding Canyon Crest to the CIF Team Championship.
Codd will arrive on campus and begin competing for the Blue Devils in the fall of 2022.
