COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 1 Duke held an eight-point lead with five minutes remaining, but Ohio State roared back with a 14-1 run to close it out as the Blue Devils were dealt their first loss of the season, falling 71-66 on Tuesday night at Value City Arena.
After E.J. Liddell hit a mid-range jumper to put the Buckeyes (5-2) up 69-66 with 15 seconds remaining, Duke (7-1) pushed the ball down the floor and found freshman
Paolo Banchero for a potential game-tying three-pointer. Banchero's three rimmed out and the rebound was grabbed by Cedric Russell, who was quickly fouled and made a pair of free throws at the other end to secure the Ohio State victory.
Banchero finished with 14 points – 10 coming in the first half to help the Blue Devils take a 43-30 lead into the break. Duke shot 52 percent from the field in the opening frame while limiting Ohio State to just 3-of-10 from beyond the arc.
Although the Blue Devils were able to maintain the lead for the majority of the second half, they found themselves in foul trouble down the stretch. Graduate student
Theo John fouled out of the game with 6:26 left, while Banchero,
Wendell Moore Jr.,
Jeremy Roach and
Mark Williams each played with four over the closing minutes.
Moore finished with a team-high 17 points on 7-of-15 shooting to go with eight rebounds and five assists. Keels and Roach each chipped in nine points, but shot a combined 7-of-22 from the floor and 2-of-8 from three-point range.
Zed Key led the Buckeyes with 20 points, while Liddell posted a 14-point, 14-rebound double-double. Russell finished 3-of-3 from deep and hit 3-of-4 free throws for 12 points.
Duke heads into a two-week break from games before its next matchup on Tuesday, Dec. 14 against South Carolina State at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
