DURHAM – The Duke women's basketball team opened the 2021-22 campaign in strong fashion, posting a 95-39 victory over the Winthrop Eagles Tuesday evening at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Lexi Gordon's 17 points and senior
Imani Lewis' 16 second half points in their Duke debuts. Junior
Celeste Taylor and sophomore
Nyah Green each added 11 points, with
Miela Goodchild chipping in 10.
Vanessa de Jesus tallied a team-high eight assists, while Taylor led the way on the boards with eight.
After a slow start to the game, Duke found its footing and flipped the switch. Leading by three at the first media timeout, the Blue Devils went on a 35-10 run to take a 44-16 lead into the locker room at the break. Duke hit 42.1 percent from the floor, including a 60-percent clip through the second quarter. The stingy Duke defense forced 14 turnovers through the first 20 minutes and held Winthrop to just 22-percent shooting.
Gordon, a product of Fort Worth, Texas, knocked down four triples and paced the Blue Devils with 14 first half points. Green added six points off the bench, while Taylor and de Jesus chipped in five points apiece, the latter adding five assists and six boards as well. Jade Williams,
Elizabeth Balogun and Goodchild tallied four points as well.
Duke maintained the offensive efficiency out of the break and got most of its point production from the paint. The Blue Devils scored 16 of their 24 third quarter points from the inside, nearly matching their first half total of 18. Taylor tallied six points and pulled down four boards in the period and Lewis added six points of her own to go with two offensive rebounds in five minutes on the floor. At the end of three, the Blue Devils held a 40-point lead, 68-28.
Lewis continued to fill the stat sheet in the fourth, as the senior forward added 10 more points to her total making her the third Blue Devil to reach double figures. Duke would put the finishing touches on the game, coasting to a 95-39 win.
A total of 12 Duke student-athletes scored on the evening and five notched blocked shots. Overall, the Blue Devils produced 42 points off 32 Winthrop turnovers, tallied 46 points in the paint and outscored the Eagles 47-10 off the bench.
J'Mani Lewis led the way for Winthrop with 13 points, while Mya Strickland and Caroline De Klauman tied for a team leading seven rebounds.
