DURHAM -- Duke women's soccer freshman
Michelle Cooper has been named Duke's PNC Achievers Student-Athlete of the Week after helping the Blue Devils earn wins in the second and third rounds of the NCAA Championship.
Cooper kicked off the week by recording an assist on
Delaney Graham's game-winner versus Memphis in the second round on Friday night at Koskinen Stadium. It marked her fifth helper of the season.
Two nights later, in Duke's Round of 16 matchup against St. John's, the freshman exploded out of the gates for two goals in the opening 30 minutes as the Blue Devils rolled to a 7-1 victory. She had three shots on goal in the first four minutes of play, with the third finding the back of the net, and later struck a right-footed attempt into the upper right corner to make it a 3-0 game.
She finished the night with season highs in shot attempts (nine) and shots on goal (six). It marked her second multi-goal performance of the season, as she also netted two against Western Carolina on Aug. 26.
Cooper's second tally increased her total on the year to 12, which surpasses Kelly Cobb (2011) for the most goals by a freshman in program history.
The Blue Devils (16-3-1) advanced to the Quarterfinal round for the eighth time in the last 11 seasons and will face defending national champion Santa Clara at Koskinen on Friday, Nov. 26 at 6 p.m. Duke is seeking its fifth trip to the NCAA College Cup and first since 2017.
PNC Achievers is a student honors platform that is active at nearly 20 schools and universities across PNC Bank's service area.
