Caitlin Cosme scored on a free kick with 16 seconds remaining to lift No. 1-seed Duke to a 1-0 win over Old Dominion in the opening round of the NCAA Championship Friday night at Koskinen Stadium.
With the clock ticking down to under a minute remaining in regulation, freshman
Michelle Cooper drew a foul just outside the 18-yard box, setting the Blue Devils up for a quality look at goal. Cosme lined up over the ball and took her time before drilling a right-footed shot off the right post and in, sending Duke through to the second round for the seventh straight year. The goal was Cosme's third of the year and 10th of her career.
The Blue Devils (14-3-1) await the winner of Sunday's Memphis versus LSU match. A date and start time for Duke's second round match, which will be played at Koskinen, will be released at the conclusion of all first-round games.
Duke recorded six shots on goal while not allowing an attempt on target for the Monarchs, who end their season at 13-5-0. The Blue Devils earned their 11th shutout win of the season.
Duke improved to 43-22-11 all-time in the NCAA Championship and 14-1-4 in the first round since the tournament expanded to 64 teams in 2001. The Blue Devils are also now 10-1-1 as a No. 1 seed.
After both teams went into the half knotted at 0-0, sophomore
Olivia Migli nearly broke the scoreless tie in the 51st minute when her long distance shot from 30 yards out struck the crossbar.
The Blue Devils kept the pressure on, sending 12 attempts towards the ODU goal in the second half. The Monarch back line held strong, however, and after sophomore
Grace Watkins sent a shot from inside the box high of the goal in the 89th minute, the match appeared to be heading for overtime. Duke found one final chance on a build that worked its way to Cooper, who sprinted towards the middle of the attacking third before she was brought down illegally, setting up Cosme's free kick.
