DURHAM – Freshman catcher
Andrew Yu blasted a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to power Team Crabtree past Team Hoyle, 3-1, in the first game of the Fall World Series on Friday evening at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Yu, a native of Nashville, Tenn., took the fifth pitch of the at-bat and sent it over the left-field wall to secure the win.
Freshman
Israel Menelik opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning for the winning side when he earned a walk to get a runner on base. The Lake Elsinore, Calif., native then stole second, advance to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch, making the most of his time on the base paths.
Team Hoyle tied the game in the next frame after graduate student
Chris Davis barreled a ball into center field to score senior
Damon Lux from second.
Junior
Marcus Johnson and sophomore
Luke Fox were both stellar on the mound in the early innings. Johnson started for Team Crabtree, striking out seven batters in four hitless innings of work. Fox was the starter for Team Hoyle, fanning nine in four innings and allowing just one hit and one walk.
Graduate student
John Natoli earned the win out of the bullpen, allowing just one run on three hits in four innings of work. Natoli also recorded six strikeouts.
Team Hoyle will look to even the series Saturday as the two teams face off in game two at 11:30 a.m., at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
