Former Duke women's soccer standout
Kaitlyn Kerr and four of her family members competed on the popular game show, Family Feud, with three of their featured episodes slated to air this week.
Kaitlyn participated on five total episodes alongside her mother, Carol, brother, Kevin, and two aunts, Barbara and Kristine Hays, as the Wolowiec family. For Kaitlyn, who was already a fan of the Game Show Network, the idea to audition was first brought up nearly six months prior the Wolowiecs appearing on the Family Feud stage.
"Before last Thanksgiving, my aunt Barb saw this ad on Facebook from Family Feud saying they want Philadelphia families to apply," Kerr said. "She sent out a group text saying that the first five people to reply can do it. I was the first to respond – I said, 'Definitely count me in.'"
After Carol and Kristine committed, and with a little convincing of Kevin, their squad was set. They completed and submitted their audition video at Thanksgiving, and a month later were selected for a Zoom interview. In May, the group was flown down to the studio in Atlanta, Ga., where they spent nearly a week waiting on their turn to play before one day auditioning in front of other families.

At long last, the Wolowiecs played five games, the maximum for a contesting family in one season. Even for Kerr, who played in four NCAA Tournaments including the 2011 College Cup with the Blue Devils, the bright lights of Family Feud coupled with the pressure of answering each question was enough to cause some pre-show angst.
"Leading up to being on stage, I felt like I had almost an anxiety attack," she joked. "Watching the other families up there, I felt nauseous, and I never get like that. Family Feud got to me so badly. Once we actually got up there, the nerves kind of calmed down, but some of the questions were stumping. Also, the lights were so hot – you're just dying. Everyone is sweating because you're nervous and the lights are so bright."
One of the best parts of the experience for Kerr was meeting the show's host and notable TV personality, Steve Harvey. Known widely as a larger-than-life figure, Harvey's ability to entertain the audience while connecting with each family exceeded Kerr's expectations.
"He was way more amazing than I ever thought," she said. "I didn't really know a crazy amount about him – I just thought he was super funny. But what's really cool about him is he's so down to earth. Between each question throughout the game, he goes into these comedy skits. He just talks about whatever you want to talk about."
Viewers in the Raleigh-Durham area can tune in for Family Feud on WRAL FOX 50 at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week (Oct. 26-28). Those outside of Raleigh-Durham are encouraged to check their local listings.
Kerr will also be featured in two additional episodes on a future date that has not been set.
