ITA CAROLINA REGIONAL MATCH RESULTS

CARY, N.C. – Four Blue Devils continued their runs through the main singles draw, advancing to the round of 16 at the 2021 ITA Carolina Regional Championship at Cary Tennis Park.

The doubles pairs of Andrew Dale and Garrett Johns also remain alive after winning two matches today during the openings rounds of doubles action.

Among the four remaining in the main draw are juniors Johns and Andrew Zhang as well as sophomore Faris Khan and rookie Connor Krug.

Johns headed into Saturday's singles round having not dropped a set in his opening two matches. After registering a 7-5 victory in his first set on Sunday, Johns dropped his next set to Wake Forest's Siddhant Banthia 6-3. Fortunately, the Atlanta, Ga., native rallied for a 6-1 victory in the final set to clinch the win. The third-seeded veteran will take on No. 13 seed Teodor Giusca of Clemson at 9 a.m., for a chance to advance to the quarterfinals.

Zhang, the tournament's No. 11 seed, also carried his stellar first day to a 6-2, 6-3 win over Charlotte's Thomas Brown on Saturday. He will face another tough test in No. 17-32 seed Bastien Huon of Coastal Carolina on Sunday at 9 a.m.

Seeded 17-32 Khan battled his way into the round of 16 with a thrilling 7-5, 7-6 (2) victory over N.C. State's 14th-seeded Robin Catry. He will meet a familiar foe in the next round as he's set to face off against teammate C. Krug at 9 a.m. Krug earned his spot in the round of 16 after besting Raphael Lambling of South Carolina in three sets. The Lakewood Ranch, Fla., native defeated Lambling 6-3 in the opening set before dropping a 6-3 decision in the second. The freshman then regrouped for an exciting 7-6 (4) tiebreak third set win to register the overall victory.

In doubles action, Dale and Johns bested Damien Nezar and Benjamin Maes of Campbell 6-3, 6-4 in their opening match. The pair then powered past Furman's James Roelofse and Emil Westling 6-4, 7-6 (5) to advance to Sunday's round of 16. The duo will meet up against the No. 1 overall seed in Brian Cernoch and Mac Kiger of North Carolina in the next round.

Heller and Zhang posted a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Maxwell Kachkarov and Udday Singh of Davidson in their opening match before dropping their second to Tomas Balazi and Leon Petko of Campbell by a 6-3, 6-2 decision.

Singles main draw action gets underway at 9 a.m., Sunday morning. The championship quarterfinals are slated to begin midday. Doubles play in the round of 16 will commence not before 1:30 p.m.
