DURHAM – The Duke women's tennis team is back in action this week as the Blue Devils are primed to compete in the 2021 ITA Regional Championships Oct. 21-25, hosted by Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The regional doubles champions, regional singles champions and finalists qualify for the season-ending ITA National Fall Championships in San Diego, Calif.
The Blue Devils will be represented by the entire squad beginning Thursday as
Chloe Beck, Karolina Berankova, Margaryta Bilokin, Kelly Chen, Ellie Coleman, Georgia Drummy, Emma Jackson and
Eliza Omirou are set to take the court, with Drummy participating in doubles only.
LAST TIME OUT
Duke wrapped up competition at the ITA All-American Championships.
Georgia Drummy opened the event in strong fashion and advanced to the round of 16 after cruising to a 6-1, 6-4 win over Pepperdine's Shiori Fukuda. Drummy's stellar play continued the following day as the she downed Miami's 16th-ranked Isabelle Pfennig in a rematch of last season. The senior gained the upper hand with a back-and-forth, 7-6 opening set win that saw the two players combine for seven break points. Pfennig was able to get one back with a tiebreaker win of her own in the second set, 7-6, but Drummy never wavered. After jumping out to 5-0 lead in the third set, Drummy would close out the set and match with a 6-2 victory. Drummy's run ended in the quarterfinal, retiring in her match against No. 12 Alexa Noel (Iowa).

Chloe Beck and senior
Kelly Chen delivered strong singles wins in the consolation draw. Beck bounced back from an opening round setback with a 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5) win over No. 64 Marlee Zein (Florida). Senior
Kelly Chen notched the highest ranked win of the event by defeating No. 11 Viktoryia Kanapatskaya of Syracuse, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. The win was Chen's first ranked win of the season and highest ranked win since defeating No. 8 McCartney Kessler at the NCAA Singles Championship last season.
Day three saw the Blue Devils' top doubles pair of No. 2 Beck and
Karolina Berankova advance to the consolation quarterfinal earning a 8-6 win over Denver's Britt Pursell and Camille Verden-Anderson.
That same day, Duke commenced play at the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Northwestern in Evanston, Ill. On the opening day of play, the Blue Devils went a successful 5-1 in singles and doubles combined. Freshmen Coleman and
Emma Jackson notched a 3-0 mark, as the doubles duo picked up a 6-4 victory over Ayshe Can/Nicole Stephens of Michigan State. In singles competition, Coleman beat Can in a pair of 6-3 sets while Jackson beat Stephens, 6-4 and 6-2. The 24th-ranked tandem of
Margaryta Bilokin and
Eliza Omirou made their season debut as a duo and beat Carrie Beckman/Yashna Yellayi of Notre Dame in convincing fashion, 6-2. Omirou also went on to notch a straight set singles victory against Beckman.
The Blue Devils continued their strong play on day two of the Wildcat Invitational, sweeping both doubles matches against the host Wildcats. The pair of Coleman and Jackson took down 2021 Duke graduate
Ema Lazic and her teammate Justine Leong, 6-2, while the duo of Bilokin and Omirou added another win at 6-4. Jackson and Coleman went on to face their doubles opponents in singles, with Jackson earning 6-4 and 6-3 wins over Lazic. Coleman rallied from a set down and edged out Leong in a tight, 7-5 set. Coleman would go on to pick up the win after a convincingly beating Leong in a 6-1 set.
Duke completed the final day of play at the Wildcat Invitational with a 5-1 record between singles and doubles. Bilokin took down her former teammate Lazic with the help of Omirou and rolled to a 6-2 victory over Lazic/Leong. Coleman and Jackson completed the sweep with a 6-3 win to push the team's doubles record to 6-0 for the weekend. The Blue Devils took three of the four singles matches as Coleman, Jackson and Bilokin each notched wins.
DUKE IN THE INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS
Duke features three ranked student-athletes in singles – Drummy (5), Chen (25), Beck (28). The Blue Devils also have three doubles teams on the national list – Beck/Berankova are No. 2, Bilokin/Omirou at No. 24, and Chen/Coleman at No. 49.
CHEN VERSUS RANKED
Now in her fifth season with the Blue Devils, Chen has collected a 112-38 singles record. Of the 112 wins, 45 of them have come against ranked opponents. Chen's 112 career wins currently rank in a tie for 13th on the Duke charts with Kristin Sanderson and she will move into a tie for 12th with Patti O'Reilly (114) with two more victories.
