LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Athletic Club has announced Duke sophomore
Matthew Hurt as one of 25 players named to the midseason watch list for the John R. Wooden Award presented by Wendy's.
Chosen by a poll of national college basketball experts based on their performances during the 2020-21 season thus far, the list comprises of 25 student-athletes who are front-runners for the sport's most prestigious honor.
In six games this season, Hurt has asserted himself as a versatile threat on the offensive end of the floor. The Rochester, Minn., native is averaging 18.5 points per game on .512 field goal shooting and a .400 clip from three-point range. He has also been the Blue Devils' most consistent rebounder, bringing down 8.5 boards per contest.
Hurt's 18.5 scoring average leads the ACC, and he is one of four players ranked in the conference's top 10 in scoring, rebounding (third) and field goal percentage (seventh). He has reached double figures in scoring in all six games this season and has recorded 17+ points in five consecutive matchups after having four such games during his freshman campaign. Hurt has also notched two double-doubles this year – versus Michigan State in the State Farm Champions Classic (21 points, 11 rebounds) and against Boston College on Wednesday night (17 points, 11 rebounds).
Players not chosen to the preseason or midseason list are still eligible for the Wooden Award National Ballot. The National Ballot consists of 15 top players who have proven to their universities that they meet or exceed the qualifications of the Wooden Award. Nearly 1,000 voters will rank in order 10 of those 15 players when voting opens prior to the NCAA Tournament and will allow voters to take into consideration performance during early round games.
The Wooden Award All American Team will be announced the week of the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament. The winner of the 2021 John R. Wooden Award will be presented by Wendy's following the NCAA Tournament in April.
The award has been presented to a Duke men's basketball player six times in its 44-year history – the most by any program nationally. The Blue Devils' most recent winner was
Zion Williamson in 2019.
