DURHAM, N.C. – Duke men's tennis expands its coaching staff as head coach
Ramsey Smith announces
Lalo Ugalde as the volunteer assistant coach.
Â
"I'm very happy to officially announce the addition of
Lalo Ugalde to our coaching staff," Smith said. "Lalo had a tremendous impact on our program this fall and played a large part in our player development gains. He brings passion and experience from all levels of college tennis – a Division III player, Division II head coach, and a Division I volunteer assistant at a top-25 program. Lalo's excellent on the court and connects extremely well with our players."
Â
Most recently, Ugalde was the head coach for both the men's and women's tennis teams at the University of Texas Permian Basin in Odessa, Texas. Prior to his stint at UTPB, he spent a year as the volunteer assistant coach with the Alabama men's tennis team (2018-2019).
Â
"I am extremely grateful to Ramsey for giving me the opportunity to join such a great program and University," Ugalde said. "It's been a great experience to work alongside him and Maciek. In the fall, we put in meaningful work with the guys and they did an amazing job staying focused during a complicated season. I'm very excited to see how all of our hard work plays out this upcoming spring."
Â
While gaining a master's degree in sports management, Ugalde was a graduate assistant coach for both the men and women's tennis teams at Jacksonville State from 2017-2018. During his time with the Gamecocks, he saw both programs achieve their highest rankings in school history in 2018.
Â
Ugalde graduated from North Carolina Wesleyan College in December 2016 with a degree in business administration and minor in accounting. A four-year letterwinner at Wesleyan, Ugalde helped his team to four USA South Conference Championships and four NCAA Team National appearances.
