Sean Sculley represented Duke men's tennis at the $2K Stan Smith Fall UTR Championship in the men's prize money singles draw as Johns won the title and Sculley finished in third.
The tournament began with the round of 32 on Friday, Sept. 11, when Sculley defeated Kennesaw State's David Durham (6-2, 7-5) and Johns took down Luke Ahmet (7-5, 6-4).
Round of 16 action began Saturday morning with Sculley beating Charlotte native Harris Trismen (6-4, 7-5) before Johns came back to defeat Ryan Colby in a three-set match (2-6, 7-6, 6-0). The two advanced to the quarterfinals as Sculley notched a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Jake Sweeney and Johns grinded out his second three-set match of the day to garner a victory against Greensboro native Braden Shick (6-7, 6-3, 6-2).
The two Blue Devils battled it out in the semifinals on Sunday morning as Johns edged his teammate in the third set to move onto the final (6-4, 4-6, 6-4). Johns claimed the title in the afternoon as his opponent retired at 5-1.
Due to health concerns surrounding COVID-19, the ACC canceled fall competition. The league is allowing tennis student-athletes to remain eligible to compete unattached and they are allowed to practice at their school's discretion.
